It used to be simple. All block salt was made in standard size 4kg blocks, packed in two’s from rival brands, each of excellent quality. Some people chose to buy the brand that matched the manufacturer of their water softener, either Kinetico or Harvey, others realised they could use either. Increasingly cost conscious customers would take advantage of our bulk deals, either to store safely until needed or to divide between family, friends or neighbours.
Then the market, specially online, became flooded with cheap alternatives, previously unknown brands often made from salt of secondary quality, certainly not the Pure Dried Vacuum salt that Harveys and Kinetico are made from. Problems soon manifested including discolouration, powdery sediment, even sand and grit accumulating in brine tanks, leading to softener malfunction, engineer call-outs and water softener warranty becoming void.
